On Friday, January 15th Colonia High School held the guitar club’s annual “Total Rock” concert. Several student-musicians from the guitar club came together to play songs and raise money for the Caroline Szewczyk fund.

The show opened up with the band Dead Sunday. The band has senior students Dylan Zalink as the drummer, Trevor Trela playing bass and singing, as well as Joe Stoneback playing guitar. Kenny Florzack went up on stage as a guest singer for the cover song “My life for hire” by A Day to Remember as well as another cover song “The Kids Aren’t Alright” by Rise Against.

Dead Sunday performed an awesome cover of Nirvana’s “Breed” that really got the crowd singing along and pumped up for the band’s next and final song. With the assistance of Senior Jerry Kirwin on lead vocals, Dead Sunday performed a cover of “Killing in the name of” by Rage against the Machine. Guitarist Joe Stoneback stole the spotlight while playing the song’s effect heavy solo.

The following act was the amazing drum duel between the Bash Brothers, Dylan Zalink and Jordan Davis. The duo went back and forth for more than 10 minutes. They traded off several different drum fills throughout the battle and synchronized their drum playing at certain moments. They fed off each others energy as well as the energy from the crowd to play as loud and powerful as possible. Watch the video yourself and you can decide the winner of the battle.

The final act was the band Break the Basement!, consisting of Colonia’s very own senior students Kenny Florzack on vocals/rhythm guitar, Jerry Kirwin on vocals/lead guitar, Joe Stoneback on bass guitar, and last but not least Jordan Davis playing the drums. The band performed originals as well as cover songs during their set. Possibly their most popular original song “Gravity hurts” was performed later in the set and its catchy chorus had the crowd singing along the whole time. Other originals they played were “Over and Done” and “Mac and Cheese Burger.” Break the Basement! covered the songs “Mr.Brightside” by The Killers, “Going away to college” by Blink-182, and “Toxicity” by System of a Down.

The band come out for an encore with Dylan Zalink switching with Jordan Davis to play drums and Jordan picked up Jerry’s guitar and the band started playing the Blink-182 song “Dammit” Once again the crowd was singing along for one last time and then the show sadly came to an end. Hopefully the CHS guitar club will put on another show before the school year is over but until then, keep on rocking.
