Students join the Quill and Scroll Society

On Wednesday, June 1st at Colonia High School the Quill and Scroll International Honor Society had their induction ceremony for their newest members. All Inductees were recommended by a teacher who works within the school’s media department.

The Quill and Scroll honor society honored five Colonia High School seniors Beth Kraus, Alexandra Powanda, Mike Passarelli, and Megan Gormanly,and three juniors, Stephanie Kontra, Samantha Pucci and Jessica Morley for their work in a form of media for at least two years. Quill and Scroll is a society of journalist created on April 10, 1926 at the University of Iowa. The creator of the society was renowned Pollster George H. Gallup, a high school advisors who wanted to give recognition to students who achieved high honors in a form of media and journalism.

To be recommended for Quill and Scroll you must be at least a sophomore, with a GPA above or equal to a B. You must have produced superior work in some phase of Journalism or school media- writing, editing, broadcasting, video, web, etc.  Lastly, you must be recommended by one of the three media staff members; Mrs. Danielle Allen- Journalism advisor, Mr. Salvatore Cerchio- Yearbook, and Mr. Daniel Hutchinson for Patriots TV.

To receive a nomination from Mrs. Allen you must have taken Journalism one and two, have taken Journalism one and written for the newspaper club, or the final option is to have written for the newspaper club for at least three years. You also have to have wrote a minimum of 15 articles for the newspaper.  In looking for candidate to recommend Mrs.Allen said she looks for “Dedication to the club or class, writing that has improved and has that innovated ideas.

To receive a nomination from Mr. Hutchinson, you must be a PTV anchor or techie for three years,. He looks for poise, dependability, reliability and enthusiasm; when Daniel Hutchinson High School G&T teacher was asked how he felt about the honor society, “After two years of being apart of Quill and Scroll, it’s a nice experience to acknowledge student who work hard.”

For a recommendation from Mr. Cerchio, students must have an A average, with dedication to the class. “Students who go above and beyond willing to fix other students pages and genuinely showing an interest in the class,” stated Mr. Cerchio High School English teacher.

Quill and Scroll has had a charter at Colonia High School for a number of years, but was only recently picked back up again. Within the last two cycle of inductees there have only been 18 new members. New members must pay a one time “new members” charge of $25 , which entitles members to a pin, certificate, organization resources and a one year subscription to the Quill and Scroll magazine. Adriana Daniel is 17 years old and is a senior at Colonia High School. Daniel is a swimmer for the Colonia swim team and also President for the Guitar Club. She has been apart of the Guitar Club for four years. Daniel spends her summers working as a lifeguard and as a camp counselor, she also works as a sales associate at American Eagle. Daniel would like to become a lawyer and later on President of the United States of America. Daniel would like to go to college at the University of Vermont and then go to Georgetown for Law school.
