After arriving at Shawnee, the Ski and Snowboard Club members get ready to hit the slopes.

CHS Ski and Snowboard Club went on their first, and only, trip this year. Their destination was Shawnee, rather than last year’s Camelback Mountain trip.

This past month the Colonia High School Ski & Snowboard Club embarked on their first, and only, 2013-2014 school year trip. In its second year of existence, the  Ski and Snowboard Club opted to travel to Shawnee Mountain, as opposed to last year’s choice of Camelback. Led by Mr. Quick, thirty eight CHS students attended, along with four chaperoning teachers.

One of the founders of the Ski & Snowboard Club, Byran Gorczyca explained that he began the club in the 2012-2013 school years with endorsement from Mr. Quick and other teachers and students. When asked about how this first annual trip went, he proclaimed it as great. According to Gorczyca, the weather conditions on the day of the trip were “very nice, it was a clear night and it wasn’t too cold, and the skiing/snowboarding conditions were fantastic!”

Being much closer than Camelback Mountain, the bus ride to Shawnee took only about two hours, Gorczyca recollected. However, he did say,”The general consensus was that the trip was a success and much fun for all who joined.” However the year ended on a sour note– as four trips were initially planned and only one of the trips actually happened. Gorczyca admits it is disappointing. The chief cause of the cancelation of the following three journeys was the lack of students signing up for them. The second trip was reportedly only a few more students away from getting off the ground.

Gorczyca encourages more students, especially underclassmen, to join the Ski & Snowboard Club. “The trips are a very fun night with friends, not too bad on cost and I’d say it’s a pretty good reason to get to leave school early,” he proclaimed.

Melanie Albanese, a CHS freshmen who only attended her first high school ski trip, and had a particularly good time: “It was fun, I took a lesson, and I want to go next year too.”
