Colonia Softball Dominates the Barrons

On a beautiful evening, the softball team takes an unfamiliar trip to township rivals, Woodbridge Barrons, as they meet for the first time this season on April 12th.

With a record of 2-5, Colonia was more than ready to take on Woodbridge as they had just come back from a close win against crosstown rivals, John F. Kennedy, 5-4. Hoping to improve their record as rivalry two games in a row was bound, Colonia’s stakes were higher than usual. On the other hand, Woodbridge, with a record of 3-4, had just come back home after destroying the Perth Amboy Panthers, 17-0.

Seniors, Mackenzie Thomas and Jordan Vazquez, had six runs each as they topped the most runs in their Woodbridge team, but Junior, Jessica Donovan represented Colonia with the most runs of seven. Rising stars, Sophomore Alyssa Gregor, obtained six runs, as Junior, Yamilee Moreta, obtained 5. “We had a great practice after beating JFK the day before. We were focused and committed since we were hoping to be district champs all the way around,” Moreta explained.

Colonia started at bat as they shut down the Barron’s defense and immediately score a run in the first inning by Donovan. Moreta causes havoc on the batting ground as she sends Sophomore, Alyssa Gregor, home for another run. The intense never stopped as Moreta scores another run in the second inning. By the third inning, the Barrons were on their heels as they tried to catch up to the resilient Patriots.

Woodbridge managed to stop the Patriot’s attack as their star Junior pitcher, Jordan Cinelli, obtained eight strikeouts. Of course, that wasn’t enough to stop the Patriots as they add up to their lead with another run in the 6th inning by Sophomore, Sabrina Tiseo.  “Our expectations were to play with the same intensity as we did two days before. We were told to not lose focus throughout the game,” Moreta confessed, as, without a doubt, the Patriots were determined to take home another win. After a rocky start in the season, Moreta and the girls finally believe that they are back on track as their record improve to 3-5. The girls will have a back to back game as the Spotswood Chargers visit Colonia on April 13th at 4 pm, so don’t forget to support your fellow Patriots as this season has only just started.
