On February 24th, Colonia High School’s adaptive learners received a donation of 4 boxes filled with books and activity workbooks directly from Ms. Judy Newman, the President of the Reading Club and E Commerce Scholastic, Inc. This kind-hearted deed will not only enhance the development of the students but it will incorporate higher reading skills and provide a world outside of a pencil and a paper, or as Ms. Motola, our special Ed teacher put it, “a brain break.”

On February 22nd Ms. Newman met Ms. Motola’s father, Mr. Joe Motola. They would both then go on to talk about Mr. Motola’s daughter and the great work she does as a teacher, and how teachers sometimes have to use their own money to buy books and resources for their classrooms. As the President of the Scholastic Reading Club, Ms. Newman was inspired by Ms. Motola’s hard work and dedication, and she was willing to get in contact with her to offer a donation of books to her and her class.

On February 23rd Ms. Newman, with the help of Ms. Motola, sent all the perfect types of books that Ms. Motola’s class needed and were able to understand. Ms. Newman sent nearly 150 books, such as workbooks, teaching guides, independent reading books, non-fiction, chapter books, science books, and even some pop culture titles. As Ms. Newman stated when asked how did she know what type of books were needed she said,  “We trust that teachers to know the level of books that are right for their students. ”

When asked why was it important to not only donate to Colonia High school but to other schools as well, Ms. Newman simply stated that “it is the mission of Scholastic Reading Club to support teachers in the amazing work they do every day in their classrooms, and help all children to have access to wonderful books so they can discover the joys of reading. ” Ms. Newman spoke about other possible donations and declared that even though they try to donate occasionally, the amount of people in need is simply too much to be able to donate to all. She noted that teachers who do use Scholastic Reading Club in their classroom get many free books as part of the program.

As many people know the power of reading allows you to take you to a whole world of imagination and it gives the reader the ability to expand their mind and learn new possibilities, no matter what type of person you are. Ms. Motola expanded her gratitude to Ms. Newman with the picture above as she received her books on February 24th through via UPS from one of Ms. Newman’s offices in New York City. With this donation Ms. Motola plans to incorporate her new donated books in her daily teaching sessions, whether it’s using the books to provide more enjoyable class time with her nine students or to give them a break and allow them to read a book of their choice.
