Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) was a confessional poet and writer. Plath is well-known for the large assortment of works she wrote during her life-span, particularly her poetry. After publishing many of her works, Plath won a scholarship to Smith College when she was 18.  As a student, Plath spent time in New York City at age 21 working as a guest editor for Mademoiselle magazine. During her time in New York, Plath attempted suicide with sleeping pills. She made a full recovery and returned to school after. Plath published many of her poetry collections and was well-known in the literature community. She got married and had two children, however her husband left her for another woman shortly after the second child. Plath fell into a deep depression and wrote some of her most emotional pieces. During this time, Plath published her only novel, and autobiographical fiction, under a pseudonym. Plath committed suicide at age 31. Her legacy has been impeded upon by her ex-husband, as he was the literary executor of her works post-death.
