Hanging high, this worker helps to construct the Empire State Building in the 1930s.

Today in 1931, President Herbert Hoover officially dedicates the Empire Sate building by pressing a button in the White House symbolically lighting the tower up.  The initial plan for the Empire State Building began as a competition between Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corporation and John Jakob Raskob of General Motors.  Chrysler already had his famous Chrysler building standing 1,056 feet tall, so Raskob was behind in the race. Refusing to be beaten, Raskob assembled  a team of well-known investors who would select the architecture firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon Associates to design the building.  The Empire state Building was constructed in its entirety in just over a year.  The Building stood at a towering 102 stories and 1,250 feet high. In addition, the Empire Sate Building was a symbol of hope and provided jobs with stable pay to many Americans during the years of the Great Depression.
