President Wilson proclaims first official Mother’s Day

Showing appreciation, Mothers Day gives Americans the chance to honor their Mothers on a National scale

Showing appreciation, Mother’s Day gives Americans the chance to honor their Mothers on a National scale

Today in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson gives a proclamation to create Mother’s day as a holiday. The idea for having such a peaceful day is commonly credited to Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, however their is debate about who truly is the original. Despite the debate, it wasn’t until 1914 when Wilson set the second Sunday of May as the official Mother’s Day.  Wilson believed that the Mother’s day offered a peaceful day  to “publicly express our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” It is clear that this value has stood the test of time; make sure to thank a mother on May 13th.
