2020 was a year full of ups and downs. With seven months in quarantine that’s still going on now, people had a lot of time on their hands. Many spent their time creating and discovering new foods that took the world by storm. Here are my picks for the top food trends of 2020.
Known as “dalgona coffee” in South Korea, whipped coffee was one of the most popular trends to hit the internet. A scoop of instant coffee mixed with water and sugar, all whisked together for a few minutes, creating a fluffy, airy cloud of coffee. It can be paired with milk or even frozen to make a coffee mousse. It’s sweet, smooth, and has a unique taste compared to normal coffee. Plus, it’s pretty cool to look at!
Perfect to pair with whipped coffee, the making of banana bread had flour being sold out in groceries stores all over the country. Although it isn’t something new, people started obsessing over it during quarantine. All it needs is flour, baking soda, salt, butter, eggs, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and of course bananas. One recipe gained over 4.3 million likes on Tiktok. This trend even branched out into making banana muffins and banana cake. Not too sweet, but definitely tasty enough to satisfy sugar cravings!
The most interesting trend to come out of 2020, cloud bread became the internet’s new obsession when one Tiktok user posted a video of the making of cloud bread. It accumulated over 700 thousand likes and 4.7 million views. Made with only egg whites, sugar, and cornstarch, this fluffy creation is one for egg lovers! For those who don’t like the taste of eggs, vanilla extract, almonds, and even pieces of fruit can be added to change the flavor of it. Some even put food coloring to make it look like a giant piece of cotton candy!
After a couple of months in quarantine, people seemed to get a bit bored. So to spice things up, pancake cereal started going viral. The hashtag “pancakecereal” has accumulated over 1.6 billion views on Tiktok. It’s exactly what the name says, tiny little pancakes added to a bowl with milk and eaten like cereal! All that’s needed to make it is pancake batter, then forming quarter-sized circles on a pan to cook. Add it to a bowl with milk (and maybe even syrup) and it’s done! It may get a little soggy though so eat it quickly!
Hot Cocoa Bombs
To end 2020 and kick off the new year, hot cocoa bombs started becoming the internet’s new sensation. Before that, these chocolate spheres filled with hot cocoa and marshmallows could be bought in stores. However, people started learning how to make them at home, and it went viral ever since. It calls for melting some chocolate and pouring it into two holes in a sphere silicone mold. Once both sides are hardened, pop out the two half spheres and fill one up with hot chocolate powder and marshmallows. Heat up the edge of the other empty half and stick the two pieces together. Let it harden and then put it into a hot cup of milk and watch the bomb melt away, creating a delicious hot chocolate! Some people even like to put edible glitter and sprinkles into the hot cocoa bombs to make it fancy!
