2020 has been quite the rollercoaster of a year for everyone, with many ups and downs regarding the pandemic, politics, and activism. Along with those, fashion also had its high and low points through the months with several styles that hit the mark, and several that didn’t even come close. Here are the best and worst fashion trends of 2020 that seem to fit right into this wild ride of a year.

While there are a few trends on this list that I adore, plaid and checked clothing is my favorite. It’s easy to make a statement in plaid, and you can either keep it simple or go crazy if you choose. A pair of plaid pants and a solid-colored shirt is a basic outfit that can be dressed up for a special occasion. However, it can still be simplistic enough to run errands in and still look fashionable. If you feel like taking a fashion risk, you can even go as far as wearing a checked coat, or other outer layers.
Channeling the 90s, square-toed heels have made a reappearance in high fashion on celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Rihanna. They’re versatile, as you can wear strappy sandal heels during warmer months, and square toe boots during the colder ones. Square-toe heels give the same lengthening effect on legs as normal heels, but with a special sole that can elevate any outfit. If you’re looking into purchasing a pair of heels, these are perfect for adding a bit of flair to your ensemble.
The worst fashion trends
Like the year as a whole, fashion had its low points, one of the most notable being the tie-dye trend. During quarantine, people at home took it upon themselves to tie-dye their own clothes. While it is a cheap, easy way to create colorful clothing, the look is played out now, and not all tie-dye is appealing to the eye. Due to the trend blowing up on social media platforms such as TikTok, brands began selling clothes already tie-dyed, adding to the fad.
Crocheted clothing was another DIY trend that made an appearance in 2020. From bras and bikinis to tops and dresses, people on social media have been endorsing crocheting. There’s nothing wrong with crocheting for fun and making your own clothes, but the items are hand-wash only. This makes them hard to clean and maintain, which can be a turn-off.
These were some fashion trends that were relevant throughout the year, and the more popular ones happened to be 90s inspired. Looks that are very reminiscent of the 90s will continue to be popular going into 2021, as many teens and young adults seem to love the styles from that decade. Reminded of their youth, older adults who grew up then love the nostalgic trends.
