Known as the Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig ended a phenomenal streak of 2,130 straight games when he sat out against the Detroit Tigers.
Gehrig’s streak started back in 1927 and stood for 12 years before injuries began to affect his play. Even in Gehrig’s absence, the Yankees still took care of business, winning the game 22-2. New York was coming off of three straight World Series championships and had brought in new promising, young talent that seemed to point towards the Yankees winning yet again.
Gehrig was showing his age early on in the year, batting .143 against a career average of .340 over his first 17 seasons.
Gehrig retired later in the year and was elected to the Hall of Fame.
