Numerous high schools in the USA are adding lacrosse to their list of sports. Schools, such as St. Joesph’s High School in Metuchen, Edison High School, Bridgewater-Raritan, and Bergen Catholic have adopted a lacrosse teams. Colonia High School should do the same.
The amount of participation in lacrosse has surged in recent years. In 2001 there were 253,931 lacrosse players in the USA, but as of 2013 there were 746, 859 people playing organized lacrosse. It is one of the fastest growing team sports in United States history, even as of 1987 they have their own professional league, the National Lacrosse League.
Colonia High School needs to adopt a boys and girls lacrosse team or club to for several athletes with no activity to do in the Spring. Lacrosse is a very physical sport so athletes who enjoy football, hockey, and wrestling, could also enjoy playing lacrosse due to similar natures in the physicality.
Although it may be costly at first, the dues for the team should be raised while a far less popular sport is taken out of the budget, to make room for a growing and more profitable sport.
Also some students just aren’t interested in the current Spring sports provided, adding lacrosse would add a team sport that not only builds teamwork but is also a great cardiovascular workout for anybody looking to get fit or increase their strength and endurance. Not to mention, colleges like Kean University and Montclair State University have strong lax programs and would be more inclined to recruit players in the state than out of state.
Personally, I would join a school lacrosse team because I have played lacrosse and know how entertaining it is. Playing lacrosse is a great way to meet new friends in a fun, competitive, and healthy environment. As a result of lacrosse growing across the nation, I’m sure many would oblige to joining a school team. And like many of our sports teams this year we could have a chance to make a name for the Colonia Patriots.
