The Cayman Islands is south of Cuba and is a British owned territory that has no tax on anything over there. Why are they lucky enough for no tax? Well, in November 1794, a convoy carrying King George the Thirds family was on its way over to the islands when they all wrecked on a reef off the shore of the island. The locals saw this and swam out to save the people. The king so grateful said that for this act they must never be taxed and to this day they can not be taxed. The wreck today is a popular dive site known as the wreck of the ten sails. A long with grand Cayman cay man also has two small islands not far form the main one these two islands are called Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. But the are also popularly know as Las Tortugas after May 10, 1503 Christopher Columbus found the islands. He named it that because of the amount of all the sea turtles that were found on and around the islands.
From October 31st to November 7th I was on vacation in the sunny Grand Cayman Islands. While there, I stayed at the plantation village. This property was located on 7 mile beach, 7 mile beach is a public beach located on the west side of the island. Depending on your room, you were anywhere from 60 to 5 steps away from the beach. This beach was home to not only hundreds of fish but also something known as the artificial reef which is manmade reef made large sunken objects close together. On this reef you will see that not only plant life but the fish made it their home too.
Plantation Village is a condo complex, each room have a full kitchen dining room and living room with balcony/porch. With every room close to ether to water or one of two of the pools located on the property you will also find BBQ grills around for your use if you want to cook up some diner. Plantation Village also has free Wi-Fi and give use access to bikes and kayaks for free just go to the main desk and ask to take one out. If you want to check this place out you can look here.
Plantation Village is also a 2 minute car ride to Georgetown which is Caymans downtown area filled with shops, restaurants and island tours or activates. Down town you will find a plethora of food choices form local fish or the famous jerk chicken. There are so many places to get great jerk chicken down there but the best is located a little past Georgetown and on the side of the road where you will find locals making it in drums on the side of the road. But if you’re not sure you would like to eat any of that, there still is some known named restaurants and fast food places around the island as well.
For you swimmers out there, there are tons of snorkel or scuba diving sites around too. Right off plantation village on 7 mile beach you can snorkel the artificial reef. Or if you want to take the 2-5 minute ride down the road to Georgetown you can dive Eden rock/ devils grotto. Then, go another 2 minutes down the road to burger king, no not for lunch but to dive the famous Cheeseburger Reef located behind the building about 60 ft. out. But, if you’re the person who likes to the thrill go on out to tarpon alley where you some through a tunnel with loads of 6ft tarpon swimming around you or watching you from under the rocks. If you are able to get up early around seven to get down to spots beach, there you can swim with the Caribbean turtles as they feed on turtle grass. They won’t be shy at all they will come right up to you, perfect for a picture.
When is the best time to go there? Talking about weather wise, there is not a time better then another. The weather in Cayman is the same 89 degrees all year round, so its perfect for a vacation during the winter to escape the cold and snow. Price wise, the best time to travel is during the months of November and early or late summer. I would recommend Cayman for you if you like the warm weather, swimming, and seeing some amazing things in nature.
