On Thursday November 21st at the Madison Square garden concert arena, I watched the band Timeflies perform. Around 8 p.m. the arena had hundreds of people pour in, groups of teenage girls excited to see their favorite band perform. One could hear the bass and the music thumping from outside of the closed doors as you handed over your ticket.
Timeflies is a two-man band formed back in 2010 by band members Cal and Rez. They released their first album in September of 2011, but they continue to do live covers of songs and remixes of popular songs on the radio.
The opening to their show on November 21st was opened by performer Sammy Adams who opened his set with 5 songs, mostly covers of songs on the Top 100. Overall, the opening was very upbeat. As a performer Sammy Adams was very hands- on with the audience.
Before you knew it, the strobe lights dimmed and the arena went dark and became very loud with excitement. Timeflies opened with their newest song “I Choose U” while walking out; needless to say the crowd went mad for the pair. The mood of the room was lifted higher than before, and everyone started singing along to the songs with them.
Cal and Rez were easily the sweetest performers I’ve seen perform live. They interacted with fans while performing and giving their dedicated fans a chance to sing the songs back to them. It was sweet watching the young girls push themselves to the front of the stage just to touch hands with Rez and Cal, and even nicer when the performers did not deny the girls. They both reached down for a hug.
While the music was pretty good, and the performers weren’t bad to watch, the arena didn’t do the crowd any justice in general. Cramped up for the most part crowds of girls and their posters stood idle in the walkways of the arena, making it nearly impossible to move.
Also, the lighting to the show sort of fit the mood and the setting, but made it impossible to see the stage at some points. The very dark setting with the occasional purple strobe light hitting your face was distracting. Overall, it could have been organized a little bit better.
Despite the slight changes that could have been made, the staff was very sweet nonetheless and made the trip out there nice. It was one of the nicest trips out to a show that I’ve been on personally. The mood was amazing and although I didn’t know a good portion of the songs that were played, by the third song I was very into the show and singing along to cover songs that I knew.
For future shows featuring Timeflies, I do recommend that you go and watch them perform; it’s definitely worth the trip.
