The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night is a novel by Mark Haddon told in the perspective of Christopher, an autistic boy who discovers the dead body of his neighbor’s dog.
Christopher decides after discovering the body to set off on a mission to find the dog’s killer. He is led to believe that the dog is murdered based off of evidence at the scene, when he finds a fork stuck into the dog’s side. He keeps a record of the evidence he finds in his “murder mystery novel.” Which basically serves as a journal for him as he discovers more information and meets new people.
The novel is very intriguing, the reader will feel involved all the way through as the mystery of how the dog was killed. Haddon does a good job telling a story in the perspective of a mentally challenged individual. The book starts with the death of the dog, and implements character development into the plot rather than providing background information first, which makes for a well written book. He uses very little filler plot and information in his work, which I personally always enjoy in a book.
The layout of the book is a little strange however, the chapters are numbered weird and the story jumps around. But once you get accustomed to Haddon’s writing style you really begin to appreciate the story.
If you are looking for a mystery novel, with a heartwarming sense to it, then I recommend reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night by Mark Haddon.
