Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children, a novel written by Ransom Riggs, was turned into a major motion picture, hitting theaters September 30th . The film directed by iconic director Tim Burton, Stars Asa Butterfield as Jake Portman and Eva Green as Miss Peregrine.
The story of Miss Peregrine and the children is only the beginning, the characters adventures continue in two following books Hollow City and Library of Souls. If all goes well with the movie currently in theaters, we might just see a sequel hitting the big screen.
The film centers on Jake Portman, a young man who loses his grandfather with a million clues left behind. Though left with many clues about his grandfather and the truth behind his bedtime stories, Jake feels clueless. He can no longer tell the difference between fiction and reality. He decides to get answers and sets out on a journey that will span space and time. When he finds Miss peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children he learns his grandfather was not lying. He meets amazing children with amazing abilities, and finds out that he is one of them.
When left with the responsibility of caring for the children he became so fond of , Jake’s true character test.. In Order to protect the children and save the one and only Miss Peregrine, they hatch a plan to defeat the evil Baron (Samuel L. Jackson). And you will just have to watch the movie to find out the rest.
I found the movie extremely interesting, it was different but certainly something you would expect from Tim Burton. Containing both good and bad qualities, the movie may not be for everyone.
The characters were poorly developed and lack description which makes it hard to understand. The children’s peculiarities were barely displayed and their names were only mentioned once. You only really got to see what the children were capable of within the last twenty minutes of the movie. I learned that the ending differed from the novel, but I actually enjoyed the ending. It was most likely my favorite part of the movie.
The story was profoundly moving covering trauma, loneliness, age, and family. The ultimate message expressed differs. The characters all shared an unwavering chemistry that was hard to miss. Asa Butterfield (Jake) and Terence stamp (Abe Portman / Grandpa) displayed a true grandfather and grandson relationship.
The acting was admirable, the characters though some flat we expressed well by the actors portraying them. The characters emotions were pronounced through each actors tone of voice and facial expression.
The peculiar abilities were both inventive and typical. Emma bloom’s (Ella Purnell) peculiar ability was not flight, but air. In a way she controlled it and it controlled her. It was an interesting twist on a rather common ability given to fictional characters.
The film Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children received relatively similar ratings. Considered a drama, horror fiction, and dark fantasy. On IMDB it received a 7.1/10 out of 10 stars. On Rotten Tomatoes it received a 64%, meaning 64% of viewers enjoyed the movie.
Though not for everyone, Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children was an interesting movie. Different from your normal action, or drama it is worth a chance. I recommend seeing Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children and reading the books.
