The movie is about a young African-American photographer named Chris(Daniel Kaluuya) and his white girlfriend named Rose(Allison Williams). They have been dating for a couple of months and Rose wants to take Chris to meet her parents. Chris notices the parents of rose acting strange. At first Chris is paranoid but as the movie goes on he soon realizes he is in danger.
Get Out is a mystery/horror movie, but also plays in with some comedy. This is a scary and thought-provoking film. It will leave you on the edge of your seat! Get Out can be predictable, but it does it in such a suspenseful way that that your eyes are still glued to the screen. It also has some funny moments. But it is a horror film that has racial anxiety at the center of it.
This is the first horror film that plays off of racism. In an interview Peele said “he wanted the audience regardless of race to see racism through Chris’s eyes.” He also mentioned, “It was very important to me to just get the entire audience in touch in some way with the fears inherent [in] being black in this country,” Peele says. “Part of being black in this country, and I presume being any minority, is constantly being told that … we’re seeing racism where there just isn’t racism.”
This movie is really thought-provoking and will have you thinking a lot. In a way, the movie is also sad because there are people that might really think the way rose and her family thinks. In the world we live in today it’s sad to think that there’s still people with racist thoughts. For example, Rose’s parents Dean(Bradley Whitford) and Missy(Catherine Keener) try to make Chris feel comfortable by telling him that they would have voted for Obama for a third term. Also, Dean (Rose’s dad), talks about how he hates bucks and deer. Dean is referring to the term “Black Buck” which was a racist slur in post-reconstruction america for black men who refused to bow to white authority. This is a hint that Dean is a racist.
While Get Out is a great movie for anyone that likes horror and suspenseful movies with a little comedy in it, I feel like the movie is easy to follow and things are predictable. They could have made it a little more mysterious and scary. They also could have added some more comedy. There was only one character with comedy and that was Chris’s friend Rod.
