Opinions, everyone has one, but not everyone is the same. Are the shoes to fill for your parents too far upon expectations? For me, my parents think that I should be able to go to college get straight A’s, and expect me to be my family’s successor to their business. It sounds easier said than done. In general getting good grades in college are excruciatingly hard. Also running a business is very hard to do and keep afloat.
Many of my family members work or have worked at the family business. Currently over 100 people work at the business. The family business takes contracts from companies such as home depot, and make items that they ask for. Pipes, screws, snow shovels, and door hinges are just the few things that they make at the factory. My Grandfather Robert John McNamara, created a business now known today as J-Mac Plastics. As of right now the two grandchildren that want to take over the family business are my cousin Robert and I.
In my opinion, running a business with certain family members will be hard. Many of my family members are hard headed, as am I. If things are not done the way they want it, then it’s going to be chaos for the workplace. This doesn’t happen a lot but when it does it can get bad. Working for myself can rigorous at times, but once started I can’t stop. The only time I get angry is if a worker is slacking off. School can also be hard to control too while running a business. Sometimes there will be classes during work hours, so for me being at two places at once will be very difficult. Keeping good grades on top of that is just icing on the cake.
What my parents want for me is to continue my education so I can be able to be good at it. What the rest of my family wants is someone who could continue working the business. They eventually want to grow the business to where it could go international and make more money than imaginable, but they need someone to go to school. As of right now the only one qualified and is in college as of right now is Robert.
Eventually, if neither me or Robert take it over, it will no longer be open. This is a lot on our shoulders. I can see as to why they keep pressuring me into this, which I don’t mind. Currently, I am still in high school and want to be thinking about prom and graduation. But, in the back of my mind will always be the business I will inherit.
