On September 27, 1840 Thomas Nast Famous political cartoonist and caricaturist was born. Nast was the creator of the Democratic donkey and the Republican elephant. He worked for the the Harper’s Weekly publication for roughly 25 years and is considered to be the Father of the American Cartoon. Thomas Nast drew several depictions of Santa Claus for Harper’s Weekly, establishing the contemporary image of this Christmas legend. He became known for his depictions of the Civil War but moved on to much greater controversial topicss. He led a crusade against corruption, using his images to help remove William Magear “Boss” Tweed and his peers from power.
