The Medal of Honor, is the most prestigious and highest award members of the Military can receive.
In 1861, Colonel Bernard J.D. Irwin, an assistant army Surgeon who volunteered to go recuse Lieutenant George N. Bascom and 60 of his men pinned down by enemy forces. Irwin’s actions were the earliest Medal of Honor actions recorded despite the award not being created until 1862.
