Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was a Black-American poet and civil rights activist. Over the span of her life, Angelou published numerous poems, books, and autobiographies and was awarded over 50 honorary degrees. Throughout her entire life, Angelou moved across the country. In the 1960s, Angelou worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and became the Northern coordinator of the civil rights organization, Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
