Today in 1959 the first Barbie doll hit the stage at the American Toy Fair in New York. Standing 11 inches tall, Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in America featuring adult-like qualities. the face behind Barbie was Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler, who created the company with her husband in 1945. Handler saw her daughter favoring paper dolls of adult women over baby dolls and wanted to take advantage of this discovery. barbie has went on to be a staple for little kids and was named after Handler’s daughter.
