Barbara Gittings (1932-2007) was an American activist in favor of LGBT equality. Gittings was a bright student in her early life, being offered membership to her school’s National Honor Society. This offering was revoked and her application was denied, however, due to a teacher observing Gittings’ “homosexual inclinations.” Gittings didn’t really think much of homosexuality until college, when she read up more up on the topic. Her research took up so much of her time, Gittings wound up failing out of school. Gittings continued her research, however, and would later join the movement to drop homosexuality as a mental illness. Her main goal in life was to tear down the “shroud of invisibility” surrounding homosexuality.
