Today in 1765, the British Government places the Stamp Act on their American colonies in a effort to raise funds for War debts. The act would see a tax placed directly on all materials printed for commercial use such as newspapers. Although the Stamp Act seemed like a common strategy to raise funds, the colonists were just hit with three other taxes raising tensions. With the passing of the Stamp Act, the colonists had opened their eyes to how their “Mother country” was undermining the economic strength of the colonies. This lead to mass protest and the founding of the well-known statement “No taxation without representation”. Britain began to realize that it would cost more to enforce the Stamp Act than remove it all together and removed it a year later. The colonists efforts sparked a fire in them to not be oppressed any longer, and only a decade later they would be fighting for independence.
