After suffering defeat, Confedraate general Robert E. Lee surrenders his army to Union general Ulysses S. Grant
Today in 1865, Confederate general Robert R. Lee surrenders to Union forces ending the Civil war. After suffering major defeats at both Gettysburg and Vicksburg, the Confederate Army was in retreat to the South. With an opportunity open, the Union Army was in full pursuit under the lead of Ulysses S. Grant. After weeks of running and trying to regroup, Lee was finally cornered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Lee understood he had no escape as the union had him surrounded, forcing Lee to surrender.
