All smiles, the crew of Apollo 13, James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise pose in their space suits for the mission.

Today in 1970, after suffering a malfunction on their way to the moon, the crew of Apollo 13 safely arrives home.  Apollo 13 launched from Florida on April 11th with astronauts James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise on board.  Everything was going smooth until disaster struck two days into the trip.  About 200,00 miles away from Earth, in the cold depths of space, one of the Oxygen tanks on board Apollo 13 blew up.

The original plan of landing on the moon was aborted, and new actions were out in place to try and bring Apollo 13 home. Mission control as well as the astronauts on board faced many problems, such as stabilizing  the aircraft and its air supply, as well as making sure there was energy to get home.  All the fear washed away as the crew from Apollo 13 landed safely in the Pacific Ocean on April 17th.
