Today in 1952, a modified U.S. Air Force C-47 is piloted and landed at the North Pole by Lieutenant Colonel Joseph O. Fletcher and Lieutenant Colonel William P. Benedict. Fletcher just seconds later, leaf his pane and took a walk over to the exact location of the North Pole, becoming the first person to do so. Prior to this event, explorers Robert Peary and Dr. Frederick Cook both claimed to have reached the North Pole by land. Upon investigating, Congress would formally recognized Peary as reaching the Pole. However, with even deeper research it was discovered that neither man reached the North Pole, Peary was indeed the closer only being about 30 miles off.
