Ethel Waters (1896 – 1977) was an American singer and actress, well-known for her jazz and big band performances. Waters grew up in a very impoverished family and had her first marriage when she was merely 12 years old. Waters was the second black person to be nominated for an Academy Award, and was the first to be nominated for an Emmy. She worked hard her entire life, and her hard work was shown through her extreme talent and the rewards she garnered for it.
