Joseph Campbell (1904 – 1987) was an American Professor of Literature that worked in comparative mythology. Campbell studied many different mythologies from many different cultures throughout his entire life. Along with studying these mythologies, Campbell was also working on his own independent works. He also fostered the theory of the monomyth- the idea that all mythology, at its roots, is the same concept. Furthermore, Campbell also theorized the “Hero’s Journey,” an ideal that pushed forward his idea of the monomyth.
