On this day in 1961, the MLB held an expansion draft. This was to stock up the newly formed Houston Astros and New York Mets organizations. There were 45 total players selected by the two teams in this draft. This draft was only the second expansion draft in MLB history and by the year 2000 there had been six of these in total. Both of these teams have been rather successful in the MLB. The Astros are last year’s World Series Champions and are in the American League Championship Series currently. The Mets, on the other hand, were just in the 2015 World Series, and have won the championship twice.
