On Thursday April 10, 2014, 78 CHS students (5 seniors and 73 juniors) were inducted this year into Colonia High School’s National Honor Society.
Colonia High School’s juniors and seniors are eligible to become a part of the National Honor Society if they have a weighted B+ average. Students must also have a good record of behavior (in and outside of school), have volunteer/service hours, and participate in leadership roles in school or around the community. Ten teacher recommendations are necessary for a student to be eligible for consideration for NHS. The teachers must teach at Colonia High School, but they can also be your coach for a sport or any advisor for a club/activity you are a part of.
If you wish to be inducted your junior year of high school, you must have participated in a minimum of six activities. For example, if you have played a sport at CHS, each year you play, that counts as one activity. If you wish to be inducted your senior year of high school, you must have participated in a minimum of 8 activities.
After meeting all of the requirements to be considered for membership, a committee of faculty members reviews all of the applications they receive and decides which students fit the expectations of an NHS student. If you aren’t accepted your junior year, you can still be considered your senior year for acceptance.
Though the main part of NHS is academics, students have the ability to volunteer and experience more opportunities because of their involvement in NHS. “[For] someone going into college…[being a member] shows that you were a leader in your school as far as not only academics, but also leadership, character, service to the school, and scholarship,” commented Mrs. Roberts, who has been in charge of NHS for eight years.
The National Honor Society helps with several events around the community, including tutoring middle school students and hosting a food drive at the beginning of the year. “[Being in NHS] looks great on college applications overall, and…gives you more opportunities for community service hours,” stated senior, and president of NHS, Karuna Katariwala. She is in her 2nd year as a member, but first year being president. To become president, the members of NHS voted and Katariwala won.
Overall, being a part of NHS has many benefits to the members, and not only academically. Sure, students can put it on a college application, but it also benefits you as a person after participating in school activities and being a part of a group of students that care about their futures.
