Social Media has become a large part of many teenagers’ lives and schools want to prevent students from being distracted by them. Schools want to offer an educational environment that’ll help students focus.
So schools began to block websites that might prevent students from focusing and learning. When the schools blocked those websites they also blocked educational sites that don’t distract students but help with schoolwork.
I believe that social media sites are a distraction, but when it blocks a student from opening an educational site, it backfires. Students in high school have matured and should be trusted to use websites that’ll further their education.
Teachers should be allowed access to change a blocked site so they have the control over what websites are being used by students. YouTube is another blocked website that hurts not only students but teachers who cannot access educational videos that are valuable to a lesson.
Being a student, I understand the frustrations of doing research in schools and trying to access websites that are blocked. Schools are supposed to offer an educational environment that will further a student’s knowledge, but if an educational site is blocked, it the resources for students.
A school is also supposed to offer a safe environment to students. When the school blocks websites, they are not doing it with the intention of hurting a student’s education, but to keep them safe from bad people and bad websites that might take advantage of them.
There are so many websites out there, and blocking them can help protect a student, but when educational websites are also blocked, it doesn’t help any student using a school computer. Schools should give teachers access to unblock a website that they find useful to a lesson so their students can learn in a new way. Websites should only be blocked if there is any potential of a student being exposed to something that makes them feel unsafe.
