Miley Cyrus is ubiquitous. She is everywhere in the world and headlining newspapers all over the world. But Cyrus isn’t creating mass media traffic for all the gratifying philanthropic actions she is doing—no, she is out there making a scandalous reputation.
With the negative publicity and Cyrus’s cringe-worthy actions, she isn’t being a good role model for young girls out there. It has been a while since Hannah Montana ended, but some members of the public still show nostalgia towards the fond memories of Disney-Miley. As a result, Cyrus has been going out of her way to show everyone that she is all grown up now (twerking, cutting her hair and wearing flashy outfits). Since everyone in this society is exposed to media, Cyrus and her efficacious scandals have been reaching the eyes and ears of the young audience, and those children aren’t learning the best lessons from the Wrecking Ball singer.
Keep in mind that Miley Cyrus (and all of the other Hollywood entertainers out there) heavily depends on the media attention in order to further expand on their career. She should reserve the right to express herself but must she do so in a fashion that raises eyebrows and excites every single gossip website? The media should just stop documenting every single move of hers. Negative publicity is still publicity.
It was August 13, 2012 when Miley Cyrus shocked the world by cutting off her famous brunette hair for a shorter, blonder, edgier look. It was all for preparation for her comeback into the music world and as a result, she released her first single/music video from her album Bangerz called We Can’t Stop. In the racy video, it showed Cyrus dancing suducively and spanking dancers, suggesting to audiences that she was no longer a Disney girl anymore.
The one event that really sparked controversy, however, was during the August 2013 MTV VMA Awards when Miley performed We Can’t Stop live. Basically, the cameras showed Cyrus stripping down to a flesh-colored bikini, waving a giant foam finger, twerking, and grinding on the 36-year old fellow performer Robin Thicke.
On the other hand, we can’t always hate and throw judgemental comments at Cyrus for being who she is. Miley, like the rest of us humans, also has feelings too. Just days after her fiancé Liam Hemsworth broke things off with her, she had a breakdown when performing at the 2013 iHeartRadio Awards singing the sad lyrics to Wrecking Ball. She knows that she’s no longer America’s Little Pre-teen Sweetheart and admits it.
No matter what you think of Cyrus, she is arguably a successful artist in today’s pop culture. Huffington Post reported that Cyrus’s album Bangerz snagged the #1 slot on the Billboard 200 and sold about 270,000 copies in its first week. Despite controversies over her music video Wrecking Ball that has her kissing a sledge-hammer and riding on a wrecking ball totally nude, the video broke the Vevo record for “Fastest Video to Reach 1 Million Views” and it also earned her 248, 316, 673 views so far.
Miley Cyrus is deciphering pop culture and changing the way we think and view celebrities. Arguably, she has the potential to be a great role model if only she didn’t do so in a degrading way. As much as her videos and performance are being watched in high volumes, that doesn’t mean her fan base is growing. Society can handle that you are growing up and putting Hannah Montana behind you, but don’t forget that many of us loved you as Hannah Montana and wish you hadn’t changed so drastically.
