On this day in 1862, Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation emancipation after Antietam.

On this day in history, former president Abraham Lincoln issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. This set a date for the freedom of over three million slaves in the U.S… This then changed the objective of the Civil War to a fight against slavery.
