On this day in 1979, a plane crashed in Antarctica. The New Zealand aircraft was carrying 257 passengers on what used to be a popular sightseeing trip to the southernmost continent. The trip was dangerous due to poor visibility and no geographical points of navigation. The plane flew too low in order to give passengers a better view of the ice shelf, but instead crashed into the side of a volcano at 300 mph, all passengers and crew were killed.
