One of the best pitchers of the 80s, Dwight Gooden faced a suspension in the 1995 season following a positive drug test. He made his return in 1996, but was far less efficient than he was in his best years with the Mets. He entered the game 0-3 but this match-up came against the worst hitting team in baseball, the Detroit Tigers. It didn’t look good in the first inning when Gooden gave up three runs on two hits, but he settled down and won his first game as a Yankee.
Prior to his substance abuse, Gooden was one of the MLB’s best pitchers, winning a Cy Young award in 1985 with an outstanding 24-4 record.
