1991 was the beginning of a dominant decade of basketball put on display by Michael Jordan and the Bulls. It would be the first of three straight championships for the Bulls, the second of five MVPs for Jordan and the first of six championships that the Bulls would go on to win in the 90s.
Jordan’s stat-line of 31.5 points per game(PPG), 6.0 rebounds per game(RPG), 5.5 assists per game(APG) and 2.7 steals per game led him to win the award in a landslide over Magic Johnson and David Robinson.
Led by Jordan, the Bulls cruised through the playoffs, only losing two games on the way to the championship. They swept the Knicks in the first round, dropped the 76ers in five games in the second round and finally managed to beat the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals.
In the Finals they met the Los Angeles Lakers, who had dominated the 1980s alongside the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons. Jordan dominated the series, averaging 31.2 PPG, 6.6 RPG and 11.4 APG on his way to his first Finals MVP and championship.
