Hall of Fame catcher, Bill Dickey was hired as the replacement for former manager, Joe McCarthy, who had led the team since 1931. His stint was short-lived and unsuccessful as the Yankees went 57-48 to close out the season and finished 3rd in the AL. Dickey resigned at the end of the year before his two-year contract was up.
Fellow Hall of Fame catcher, Yogi Berra started his legendary career as the Yankees catcher in 1946 and spent years working with Dickey when he returned to New York in 1949–this time as a coach, not a manager. Dickey coached under Casey Stengel’s management until 1958, when he left and became a scout. He had his number retired in 1972 and had a plaque placed in Monument Park in his honor.
