Babe Ruth’s historic homer came in a 4-2 win over the Washington Senators. The Yankees were capping off a historic 1927 season where they found themselves in first place in the American League by 18 1/2 games. The Senators were having a respectable season in their own right, standing at 3rd place in the AL.
Led by a stacked lineup famously known as “Murderers’ Row”, the Yankees finished the regular season with 110 wins and capped off the year by sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series for a total of 114 wins on the season.
Ruth was the most feared hitter in the league by far, having hit 366 homers on his career.
With his slugging prowess, Ruth single handedly changed the way the game of baseball was played. He broke the single-season home-run mark in three straight seasons, in 1919 with 29, 1920 with 54, and 1921 with 59. The Great Bambino had moved into first place on the all-time homer list in 1921 with number 139.
