Fall is the perfect time of year to snuggle and dress comfortably. Some refer to it as sweater weather because of its cool but comfortable temperatures. We must dress appropriately every season, but how do we dress cute for fall without looking like a lumberjack? Can we wear a flannel without looking like we’re going to chop down a tree for firewood? Yes, we can, and here’s how.
The Flannel Troubled Child
We’ve all been there, we wanted to wear a cute flannel but ended up looking like a lumberjack. What saves us from looking like we’re saying timber is the style of the flannel you wear. A flannel with huge squares is a no-no, immediately. Less is more and the less those squares are in size the more fashionable you’ll look.
This isn’t a size issue but it is also a color issue, color combos like red and black scream lumber. It’s a stereotypical vision of what a lumberjack would wear. Oh, I also thought I should add that you never should wear a cut-off flannel you’re just asking to get paid to cut down trees. Instead of blue and black do blue and white, go for white being included in the flannel. Soft colors instead of bold colors are what’s going to save you from looking like you sleep in a cabin the most.
Sweater Weather
Any person can agree that being in a sweater is one of the best feelings ever. We’re gonna keep in mind that comfiness when looking for a sweater. Starting with the color, I prefer for the color to not be bold but rather neutral. A neutral color palette as well as earth-tone gives the Fall feeling. Just because your sweater is a neutral color like beige or earth-toned like green doesn’t mean we can’t have a design on it. When choosing a design for your sweater I think it is best to go with something simplistic yet bold, for instance, an American flag knit sweater. The beige base of it is neutral but right in the middle is an American flag to give it some personality. Minimalism is key for creating a timeless Fall wardrobe.
Layers
Summertime is gone, say bye to your warm temperatures and accept the cool breeze of fall. With the change in temperatures, we need to ditch the tank tops and move to our layers. Keep in mind fall isn’t as cold as Winter so you don’t need to pull out your puffer jacket just yet. Layering can be tricky, the tricky part being how to do it and look cute. Layers are three steps those being your shirts, pullovers, and your jackets.
Starting with your shirt, that being your base. Keep it simple and classy, go for the tops, long sleeves or short sleeves, that are one color. However, the color you choose cannot be something bright or that stands out. Go with the colors you see around you like red, green, or orange for the leaves. Shades of brown for the trees, along with dark blue, grey, or timeless black for the sky. We want to keep the colors earth-tone, more on the darker side to give you that timeless look. We strive for dark colors so you don’t confuse the clothes you’re wearing with your summer clothes. It’s a new season, a new vibe.
Styling the Pullover
Moving on to the pullover, with pullovers these garments can be a cardigan, flannel, or even just a nice bottom-up (preferably denim). Whichever you choose is completely up to your preference. However, you want the pullover to match your shirt and jacket so it pulls it all together. With the colors, you want to choose from an earth-tone color pallet like a light brown flannel, a denim blue bottom up, or a red cardigan.
What’s important to keep in mind is that there’s a theme going on and if we want to look our most chic for the fall we must follow. When wearing a pullover you can look good by leaving it open, showing your shirt, or having it buttoned up. If you choose to button up your pullover I recommend only buttoning it up halfway so that you can still see your timeless shirt while still drawing attention to the design of your pullover.
Finishing it Off With a Jacket
Staying away from the insulating puffer jackets. You have a wide range of jackets to choose from to complete your Fall aesthetic. The original denim jacket is a timeless piece of clothing. Whether you wear it cropped or regular, you will always have a chic presence. You can wear denim on denim but not everyone can pull it off. let’s remember it isn’t the eighties anymore. Throw in a red leather jacket to add an extra pop of color to your outfit while still maintaining a classy feel, however, I prefer you stay away from a moto leather jacket only because it gives off a kind of rebellious vibe and that’s not what we’re going for.
We want a chic timeless look, whether the leather is faux or not it is up to your preference. The same goes for a suede jacket, a nice light brown suede jacket just radiates a comfortable sophisticated attitude. Be careful though, while suede is comfortable and pretty it can easily be destroyed by water, so definitely check the weather before you decide to step out with the final layer to your outfit. An honorable mention I’d like to throw in is the corduroy jacket, it’s iconic presence isn’t just timeless but also my favorite due to it being the comfiest jacket out of the ones listed above. I’ve had the same one since the sixth grade.
Sliding on Some Pants
We’ve spent time talking about what to do for the top half of your body, now it’s time for the lower half. Remembering that the temperature is around the sixties means we must wear pants. When I think of Fall, jeans and cargo pants come to mind. Since there are multiple styles of jeans out there the ones I’d like to highlight for their autumn feeling are; straight-leg, carpenter, boyfriend, bootcut, mom, and the trendy baggy jeans.
Not to worry the rise of the waist on the jeans doesn’t matter, so you can rock a high-waisted straight-leg denim while pulling off a low-waisted baggy jean. It especially doesn’t matter because your lower stomach will not be getting views due to the girls and gays not wearing crop tops in this weather, it will be covered either by cozy sweaters or stylish layering, I prefer the color denim you wear either; dark wash denim for the nice dark blue, medium wash for the indigo effect, and light wash which embodies Fall coziness.
Cargomania
Cargos being a trend in the 2020s means you can wear these, particularly in any season. But for right now let’s focus on Fall. Cargos maintains a rather more colorful approach to pant wear than denim. You can buy them in almost any color. I’m not saying you should but you could. Keeping with the same earth-tone pallet, a perfect approach to completing the lower half look of your Fall aesthetic would be to wear green cargo. Not only does green symbolize money but also the trees. Grey would be an exceptional second choice due to the cool yet dark color. I prefer a nice medium grey cargo to go with a denim jacket and a straight-leg pair of jeans to go with a light brown suede jacket.
Slip Into Your Shoes
The earth isn’t as green and bright blue as it was two months ago in the summer. We gotta put our flip-flops back into storage and pull out our fall collection. With muddy grounds being the terrain you might have to walk on here and there a nice boot can do you wonders. I know, when I say boot you’re probably thinking of an equestrian. Thankfully I am not, I’m talking knee-high moto boots. I know I said to stay away from the Moto leather jacket but the Moto knee-high boot is a completely different ballpark. We want that cool rebellious look on our feet, with the buckles and straps it gives the vibe that we’re on a mission, and in a second I could be gone. Moto boots look best in either brown or black, any other color and I’m turning away.
If you want to take the comfy approach with your footwear Uggs are the way to go, whether they’re the Tasman slippers or the new ultra mini boots, Uggs are the way to go. The slipper or boot is not only comfortable but also comes in earth-tone colors, which is what we want! But remember uggs are made from suede so just like the jacket you might want to check the weather before walking a mile in your fuzzy ultra mini boots.
Formal Fall Footwear
Now, stepping away from comfort and into formality. A perfect Fall shoe believe it or not is the boat shoe. I know I said to forget about summer, but with boat shoes, it’s that perfect chestnut brown that keeps them in style for an extra season. Not only does the color spare them from the closet but also the design of them is rather unique, they aren’t like a loafer but are drastically different from a sneaker. they’re their own vibe and bring a sense of sophistication to any outfit you wear, whether it’s walking the Fall streets to a coffee shop, or riding on a boat on a lake your boat shoes will boost an outfit from a seven and a half to a ten.
