Denny McLain won his first Cy Young after posting a record of 31-6. He recorded 280 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.96. This performance was enough for him to win both the Cy Young and the MVP. He and Bob Gibson became the third and fourth pitchers to accomplish this feat in the same year. McLain would go on to repeat as the award recipient the very next year. Unfortunately, he failed to repeat his excellence and never had another winning season after 1969.
