Some things on my Christmas list this year are books. I want “Coraline ,” “The Notebook ”, “X ”, and “Legally Blonde ”.
Those books are on my Christmas list because I have already watched the movie adaptations. I did the same with The Hunger Games. I watched the movies and then read the books. All of the books, besides “X, ” have come out before the movies.
Book Wish List
Neil Gaiman wrote “Coraline." It is recommended that 10-year-olds and older read the book. It is about a young girl moving into a new house with her parents and finding a little door inside. When she goes through the door, she notices strange things.
I watched the movie before I was 10, but some other kids might not be comfortable with some things in it. At Colonia Middle School (CMS), the seventh graders have to read a book from a different genre every month. My sister's friend, Irene, read it for Mystery Month.
Nicholas Sparks wrote “The Notebook.” The rating is PG-13. It is about this broke boy and rich girl falling in love in the 1940’s.
The swearing and implied sex caused this rating. There is no violence in this book. The movie is sad and bittersweet. It has made many of the watchers cry such as me. I expect the book to have the same feelings.
Joseph Torres wrote an article about this book in January. He recommends that people still read the book as well watching the movie. He said that the book was an emotional rollercoaster.
Amanda Brown wrote “Legally Blonde.” The movie's rating is PG-13. I can't find a rating for the book but I assume it will be the same. This is about a girl in college thinking her boyfriend is proposing. When he isn’t she tries to get into the same college as him, Harvard. This movie is fun and inspiring, making me excited to read the book.
Tim Waggoner wrote “X.” This is rated R. It is about a group of adult film actors staying at an old couple's house in Texas. Later they are caught and have to fight for their lives.
There is no age rating for the novel yet since it came out a few months ago but I assume it to be the same. The reason for the rating is because of strong violence, gore, sex, nudity, drugs, and language. I watched it when I was 15 and did not think it was that bad. I would have to skip over some parts though.
If you or someone you know likes books and wants some for Christmas here are some recommendations for many genres.
If you like non-fiction books or memoirs, a good book is, “Girl Interrupted .” Susanna Kaysen is the author. This book also has a movie based on the memoir. It is about a girl in a psychiatric hospital and how it was for her and other patients. The recommended age group for this book is 14-18. I recommend this book to everyone. I think everyone should read this and watch the movie.
If you like dystopian books, “The Hunger Games,” is an amazing book for you. It is in an original trilogy but a new book came out in 2023 and another is coming out in 2025.
Suzanne Collins wrote these books. It is about a 17-year-old girl volunteering to go to her sister's place at the reaping. Now she will have to fight for her life in an arena against 23 other people picked.
Even if you don't like dystopian books I recommend this book so much. This book also has a movie based on it. It is recommended for readers at the age of 10 and up.
If you are a fan of thriller books, “How to Survive Your Murder ” is a great pick. Danielle Valentine wrote it and it is recommended for ages 15 and up. This is one of the books that seriously had me scared while reading it.
It is about a girl at a Halloween party whose sister is killed. At her sister’s trial, she hits her head and then starts seeing her sister. She needs to find out who killed her before it is too late.
I recommend this book to all of my friends. My friend Sophia Leanza is currently reading it.
If you like romance books, you will like “Better than the Movies .” This is written by Lynn Painter and is recommended for ages 12 to 18.
It is about a girl who loves rom-coms, dreaming of her own. She does not realize that it might be starring her and the annoying next-door neighbor that she has known forever. A sequel just came out two months ago called, “Nothing Like the Movies .”
In April, Gabryelle Chouloute wrote an article about this book. She says that this has become one of the best young adult (YA) romance novels. This is one of her comfort books and she recommends it to anyone who simply loves love.
Sci-fi in books is hard to notice in books but an amazing book with it is, “The Selection .” I recommend this book to anyone I go to the library with. It is written by Kiera Cass and is in a series of five. This is suggested to be 13+ but I believe it to be alright for 10+.
It is about a world where there are eight castes, one being royalty and getting poorer as it goes higher. The main character, America, is a five. She sends an application to the selection for the prince to find a wife.
An amazing book for mystery lovers is “Ward D .” Freida McFadden wrote this and is my favorite book by her. I love all of her books and they are perfect for anyone who loves mystery, thriller, or horror. They are all fast-paced and have amazing plot twists.
12 to 17-year-olds are the recommended ages for this book. It may be a little bit creepy for 12-year-olds but if they can handle it I would recommend it.
This is about this student having to spend a night in an inpatient mental health unit. Once you are in, you cannot get out without a code. There is a reason she cannot go, but she has no other choice. She starts realizing something is going on. Can she save herself and the patients?
If you like historical fiction or just plain fiction, you should read “Malibu Rising .” Taylor Jenkins Reid wrote it. People 18+ is the targeted age. I think people 15 years old and up would be okay to read this book. This rating is because of drug and alcohol use, death, sex, and abandonment.
The book is about a famous singer’s family growing up. The daughter gets lost in drugs after becoming a famous surfer and model. There are a lot of family drama and issues in the book.
You could always read banned books if your state allows. Check out this article for more information on banned books.
