Opinions
This version of the Grinch is probably one of the best we’ve seen since the original animated film in 1966. The Grinch’s facial expressions and tone of voice help kids understand the movie and are easy to follow along with. Especially in the one scene where he runs out of all the food. The Grinch is then seen stuffing his face, and then left with a cupboard of nothing.
The movie steers away from the traditional book How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss, and doesn’t follow everything perfectly. But, I understand why, it adds more to the movie making it 1 hour and 38 minutes long. The soundtrack for the movie also steers away from the traditional Christmas movie making one like we’ve truly never seen before, with features from Pentatonix, Run-DMC, and even Tyler The Creator!
A student Valentina Diaz has an opinion about the movie, “I think it was definitely a lot funnier than scary, especially when being compared to the 2000s version!”
Another student at Colonia High School Viktoriya Yaropud says, “I don’t think it’s a bad movie but like focusing on the movie itself and how it is made it’s definitely for a much more child-like audience. I also think that it comes off as looking almost AI-generated, for it being such a popular movie!”
Box Office
Compared to the other Grinch movies this one made $271.4 million in the United States and Canada, and $255.4 million in other countries, for a total worldwide gross of $527.8 million. While the 2000s Grinch — How the Grinch Stole Christmas made $260 million domestically and $85.1 million in other territories, resulting in a worldwide gross of $345.1 million. The 2018 Grinch made roughly $182.7 million more than How the Grinch Stole Christmas made!
The Grinch (2018) also helps teach kids a golden rule that everyone should follow — be kind to people even when they aren’t kind to you. Younger viewers are taught that Christmas truly isn’t just about presents but about being together for the holidays.
What do we learn from the Grinch?
We learn these lessons through scenes like when the Grinch is nervous about attending Christmas dinner. After he steals the Whos’ Christmas decorations and presents, he finds himself on Cindy Lou’s doorstep, waiting to enter Christmas dinner. The Grinch is truly nervous and fidgets with his tie. He eventually musters up the courage to ring the bell. He joins in on the festivities he’s missed out on for far too long. Watching a young and energetic little girl humble the Grinch is as comical as it is sweet. Like most, he genuinely wants to make a good impression. But is scared that they won’t accept him because of his prior actions. Happily, Max, Cindy Lou, Donna, and Bricklebaum are all there to support him as he works through his nerves and embraces the celebration.
