A business that specializes in beeswax called Burt’s Bees. They were founded in 1984 by Burt Shavitz. The company started in Maine but is now one of the largest beeswax and chapstick companies in all of America. The company makes many products but is mostly known for chapstick which is what I am reviewing.
Origin
Originating in Maine in the early 1980s. The business began when the co-founder Roxanne Quimby created candles from leftover beeswax. Burt Shavits (The founder) was a beekeeper and the head of the whole company. Before he founded his company he often did experiments and projects with his beeswax. His first headquarters was an abandoned one-room house in which he rented from a friend for $150.
Their first product was candles made from old beeswax. But since then they have made a variety of other products. Such as skin care items, chapsticks, and body butter.
Revenue
The business has over 450 employees. and the revenue per employee ratio is $600,000. Their peak revenue was $270.0M in 2023. In 2007 (clorox) bought the company for a reported sum of $925 million USD. The company is currently worth nearly $1 billion dollars and is still expanding.
Since 2022 they have been making at least 250 million dollars in revenue. Now the company makes $739,726 in a day. In a single month, the company normally makes close to $22.5M in revenue.
The Burt’s Bees Executive Team is rated an “A” and led by CEO Jim Geikie. Their employees rate their Executive Team in the Top 10% of similar size companies on Comparably with 201-500 Employees.
Comparison
Burt’s Bees number one competitor in EOS. EOS has always been the second brand. In 2015 EOS accounted for 11.5% of lip balm sales across the United states and they were not the leader in sales. They fell second only to Burt’s Bees. Burt’s Bees accounted for 12.2% of all lip balm sales across the US which was 0.7% more.
EOS stands for Evolution of Smooth. Similar to Burt’s Bees they make many products not only just chapstick. They produce lip treatments/masks, body lotion, shave cream and many other products.
Many People prefer the pricing of EOS over Burt’s Bees. EOS costs cheaper per unit and offers more product in the packaging. But Burt’s Bees definitely has more natural and healthy ingredients. They also have more variety.
My opinion
I personally use lip balm everyday. Most people including myself hate to have my lips dry, especially during the wintertime. Chapsticks are a part of my everyday style, I’ve used many different products but Burt’s Bees has come to be my favorite. My personal favorite flavor in the “honey” which came out over the summer.
I have used many different lip balms from both EOS and Burt’s Bees. While EOS is a good company I can’t help but to use this old saying. “Quality over Quantity”. Burt’s Bees ingredients are very good and the lip balm overall just feels better. I think it applies smoother and feels better on the lips then most companies.
