After a perfect regular season, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots entered the playoffs with a first round bye. They easily made it through the Divisional Round and the AFC championship and would face off against the underdog Giants, who entered the playoffs as a 5 seed and clawed their way to the big game.
The perfect Patriots were a whopping 12 point favorite for the game, led by season MVP Tom Brady and Randy Moss, who each broke the touchdown record for their respective position.
The Giants kept the game close behind their spectacular defensive play before one of the most iconic plays in Super Bowl history shifted the momentum completely. On New York’s final drive, quarterback, Eli Manning was rushed, pressured and nearly sacked before miraculously escaping the pocket and slinging it to David Tyree, who made an impressive catch, grasping the football on the top of his helmet and bringing it down. With 35 seconds to go, Manning capped off the drive by throwing a 13 yard touchdown to Plaxico Buress to seal the game for the Giants.
Although Manning would win Super Bowl MVP, the defense was the main difference maker in the upset. They held the Patriots to their lowest scoring game of the season, winning 17-14 and sacked Brady 5 times.
