After going 4-28 in 2 seasons under Rich Kotite, the Jets turned to a more credible, regarded coach in Bill Parcells. Bill Belichick had just stepped down from being the temporary head coach and Parcells, who had just spent 4 seasons with the New England Patriots, appearing in the 1996 Super Bowl.
In his first season with the Jets, he improved New York from 1-15 to 9-7. In 3 years with the Jets, Parcells went 29-19 and appeared in the AFC championship in 1998.
