After being retired from baseball for 9 years, MLB legend, Ted Williams made a return to the diamond–this time as a manager. Williams signed a contract worth up to $1 million that included a salary of $100,000 and an option to buy a stock in the team.
Williams played in the MLB for 19 years with the Boston Red Sox, posting a .344 career batting average, 521 home runs and a .482 on-base percentage. In 1966, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot. In his first year with the Senators, he helped them improve from 68 wins in 1968 to 86 the following year. It was the first time since 1952 that the Senators were above .500. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t replicate that success with Williams and in 1974, after a 54-100 season, Williams and Washington parted ways.
