Businessman Arthur B. Modell led an investment group in purchasing Cleveland for a record 3,925,000 dollars. Bob Gries, who already had a share with Cleveland bought in again as a minority owner.
In 1996, Modell moved the Browns to Baltimore and they became re-branded as the Baltimore Ravens. Later, in 1999, an expansion franchise in Cleveland retained the Browns identity and resumed football play in Cleveland.
