Colonia Girls’ Soccer tops 17th seed, South Plainfield in the GMC tournament with tremendous energy. On their own blue turf Colonia gets the 2-1 win thanks to two year captain, Amanda Poulakowski.
On October 21st, the Colonia girls soccer team went up against South Plainfield. With Colonia, the sixteenth seed in the GMC, and South Plainfield the seventeenth seed, it was bound to be a good match up. The Colonia girls are nationally ranked as 2,093 and ranked in New Jersey as 234. While South Plainfield has a national rank of 2,590 and New Jersey rank of 279. It’s predicted that Colonia’s Highest Scorer Amanda Poulakowski will make a huge impact on the outcome of this game scoring over a third of the team’s goals for. Claire Nagel from South Plainfield however, is good competition scoring eight out of eighteen goals for the 2015 season. South Plainfield goalie, Briana Slover tops Colonia’s goalie, Kelly Silva with a total of 154 saves. It should be a close matchup between the two GMC teams. Colonia’s record at 7-8-2 and South Plainfield’s at 3-13-2.
There was high energy on the field at the start of the game. Both teams defensive line put up a tough fight. A lot of the first half was played surrounding the mid-field. When late in the first half, Colonia’s leader of assists Stephanie Piccininni passed the ball through to Poulakowski who was in scoring position and finished. Colonia had the half time lead 1-0. In the second half, Nagel tied it up, making it a neck and neck battle at 1-1. The game was moving slow, a lot of missed opportunities on both sides of the field. Time was running out in the second half, but instead of needing to go into overtime, Poulakowski netted her second goal in the 74th minute, leading her team to victory. Colonia out shot South Plainfield 16 to 10. Silva from Colonia collected 8 saves while Slover racked up 9. Colonia would advance past the preliminary round of the GMC tournament and face Monroe, at Monroe on October 23rd.
