On Tuesday, January 14th, Dodge Poet Gretna Wilkinson came to Colonia High School to talk to Ms. Athanasakos’ and Ms. Simkovich’s classes and Colonia High’s Poetry Club, Keeping It Real. During her presentation she helped students “create a breeding ground for creativity”, meditate before writing, write poems because their is no wrong answer, and edit poems for content, word choice and sound.
Gretna Wilkinson was born and raised in Guyana South America, and began her teaching career as a missionary teacher in the jungles there. Her newest book, Opening the Drawer, was published in October 2011. She holds a Doctorate in Literature from Drew University and was recently named Monmouth County Arts Educator of the Year.
We thank her for coming to Colonia High School and igniting poetic creativity in our students.
